How to Conduct Fatigue Testing
2025-12-28 17:12:48
In modern engineering and product quality control, fatigue testing is a crucial means of detection. It is used to evaluate the durability performance of materials or products under cyclic loading, helping to predict their service life and prevent safety accidents caused by fatigue failure. Fatigue testing has extensive application value in various fields, such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing, electronic equipment, and medical devices.
1. Basic Concepts of Fatigue Testing
Fatigue refers to the phenomenon where materials undergo performance degradation or even fracture after a certain number of cycles under cyclic stress or strain. Unlike static loads, fatigue failure often occurs at stress levels far below the yield strength of the material, and it is characterized by its suddenness and unpredictability. Therefore, it is particularly important to use fatigue tests to simulate actual operating environments and assess the reliability of products.
Two, The Main Types of Fatigue Testing
According to the different loading methods, fatigue testing is usually divided into the following categories:
1. Axial fatigue testing: The specimen is subjected to tensile or compressive loads along the axis.
2. Bending fatigue testing: Includes rotating bending and three-point bending tests, commonly used for shaft-type parts or plates.
3. Torsional fatigue testing: Applies cyclic torsional torque, suitable for components such as drive shafts.
4. Composite fatigue testing: Simulate complex working conditions with multiple directions and loads, closer to actual applications.
In addition, according to the test frequency, it can be divided into high-cycle fatigue testing (10⁴~10⁷ cycles) and low-cycle fatigue testing (<10⁴ cycles), the former focusing on stress-life analysis, and the latter focusing on strain-life characteristics.
Three, The Implementation Steps of Fatigue Testing
Fatigue testing generally includes the following steps:
1. Clarify the purpose of the test: determine whether the test is to verify product life, evaluate material properties, or discover potential failure modes.
2. Design specimens and fixtures: design appropriate specimen shape and size according to standards (such as ASTM, ISO), and prepare the corresponding fixtures.
3. Set test parameters: including load amplitude, frequency, waveform (such as sine wave, square wave), temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors.
4. Execute the test: Use servo hydraulic, electric vibration tables, or special fatigue test machines for long-term cyclic loading.
5. Data Collection and Processing: Record data such as the number of failure cycles, crack propagation, load-displacement curves, and draw S-N curves (stress-life curves).
6. Result Analysis and Evaluation: Combine test results to predict product life, conduct safety assessments, and improve design.
Four, The Significance and Challenges of Fatigue Testing
Fatigue testing not only helps enterprises improve product quality and reliability but also provides a theoretical basis for product design, reducing the costs of later maintenance and recalls. However, fatigue testing also faces many challenges:
- Time-consuming: A complete fatigue test may take several weeks or even months.
- High cost: High-end testing equipment is expensive and requires specialized personnel to operate and maintain.
- High simulation difficulty: The actual working conditions are complex and changeable, making it difficult to fully replicate.
Therefore, in recent years, with the development of computer simulation technology, more and more enterprises have adopted finite element analysis (FEA), multi-body dynamics (MBD), and other means for virtual fatigue analysis before physical testing to shorten the test cycle and reduce costs.
Five, Conclusion
Fatigue testing is a key link in ensuring the long-term reliable operation of products. With the continuous advancement of industrial technology, fatigue testing methods are also constantly being optimized and developed. In the future, combined with digital and intelligent technology, fatigue testing will be more efficient and accurate, providing a stronger quality guarantee for various engineering applications.
